XML: One Metalanguage to Rule Them All?

Since 1998, when it was approved as a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Recommendation, Extensible Markup Language (XML) has become familiar to everyone who has any contact with the IT industry. Or at least its name has become familiar; its meaning, sadly, is much less widely understood. XML has become one of those subjects on which everyone has an opinion; some of those opinions, however, are based on grotesquely mistaken beliefs.
