Security: Tools and Technology (Part IV in a Series)

by Tom Welsh

The first three Executive Updates in this five-part series on IT security showed how difficult it is to plan and carry out a corporate security policy. Dealing respectively with investments and threat levels, risks and procedures, and basic countermeasures, each of the three Updates contributed a different view of the security landscape. The resulting picture is one of dangerous complexity in light of the rule that security is similar to a chain that can be no stronger than its weakest link. Apparently, security managers must be skilled at juggling dozens of threats and defenses without neglecting vital long-term strategies.
