From the point of view of design and analysis, there are advantages in looking at large information systems comprised of smaller autonomous interacting entities. These entities can broadly be defined as "agents," and their interactions can involve processes that may be described by such metaphors as "cooperation," "collaboration," and "competition" in a population of agents. In this Executive Update, we will explore the ontology of intelligent agents.
