One year ago, I began covering the data warehousing industry. Since then, it has undergone considerable change. New companies, products, and technologies have appeared, and new problems like the year 2000 have come to haunt us. In addition, the past 12 months have seen a number of vendor acquisitions and strategic alliances. In this issue I want to step back and examine the state of the data warehouse industry. My goals are to provide some guidance on where the industry is and where it is heading, and to create some consistency and methodology for analyzing it in future issues.
