Simply stated, Auto-ID technology is a means to link physical objects to the Internet using low-cost radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. To manage the large amounts of new data generated by the system, Auto-ID uses a sophisticated IT infrastructure based on open standards. This technology lays the foundation for increases in productivity within supply chains and general commerce that will take place during the next 10 years.
