A recent federal government report into the inadequacies of software and systems testing highlights that $60 billion is squandered annually in the US alone because business systems are poorly designed, configured, and maintained [1]. On a personal level, everyone understands the misery that poorly performing IT systems bring: the horrors of losing a whole morning's work from a system crash, the annoying problems encountered following an application upgrade, and losses in commission when call center networks are just too slow.
