Software information technology typically passes through a series of phases during its uptake in the market. Each phase has certain characteristics and implies something about the status of technology at that time. Generally speaking, the phases are: proprietary, standard, open, volume, commodity, and public. Note that these phases are really a measure of how well the technology has been adopted and how pervasive it is, rather than who "owns" it. Not all technological software innovations make it through all six phases; some wither on the vine or fail to evolve to the point where they are attractive enough to become ubiquitous.
