Rationality in the Real World, Part 1
I have been thinking about Cutter Technology Council Fellow Tom DeMarco's recent Council Opinion on the subject of "poor" and "rich" interactions among IT workers and the enduring distraction of meetings (see " Rich and Poor Interactions," Vol. 5, No. 9). It occurs to me that "meetings" often supposedly represent forums for decision-making. As such, they probably underperform, initially because of the complexity of group dynamics. But they're more likely to disappoint because of the constraints of "rationality" in making choices when there's uncertainty involved.
