Working Together: Planning and Preparation

by Lee Devin

Here's the mantra: "Plan so that you can do what you want; prepare so that you can do whatever you need."

We're all familiar with the collection of sayings (by generals, athletes, and other culture icons) that tell us to plan meticulously but to be aware that in the midst, plans go out the window and we have to improvise. What we're not familiar with, at least in my experience, are proven ways to prepare for that moment of improvisation. Mostly we attribute the enviable success others seem to have at that moment to genius or talent, qualities we can't be responsible for cultivating, since they're innate and uncontrollable.
