IT Budgeting/Costing Is a Mess -- and Hinders IT Governance, Part 2

by Robert J. Benson, Tom Bugnitz

Last month we began this three-part series on a Cutter survey on IT budget and costing practices. The results indicated that IT budgeting and costing practices, generally, are a mess. Worse, there's little "best practice" in how IT budgets/costing should support the IT governance process. Indeed, there's little to suggest (in practices followed) that CIOs understand how important the budget/costing process is to successful IT governance. This month we focus on IT governance and how budget is such a critical element. In other words: since budget is critical, and budget is a mess, then IT governance must also be a mess.
