Complying with HIPAA: The Impact on IT

In most countries, healthcare lags behind other industries in utilizing the latest technological innovations. In the US, healthcare expenditures amount to $1.28 trillion annually, and -- surprisingly enough -- the industry's spending on IT surpasses $44.5 billion, which is about 3.5% of all spending. Other countries show similar trends. The primary distinction with regard to IT in the healthcare industry is in its use of disparate, often manual, fragmented systems. In some cases, these systems are either outdated or they follow stringent proprietary codes, and code validation processes cannot be easily unified.
