At the dawn of the corporate computer age, software delivery options were simple. If your company needed new functionality, you programmed it yourself. This rule applied even to the system utilities we now take for granted as integral components of our operating environments. Our IT predecessors had no other choices. Each company bore the full risk and expense of building its software portfolio using its own internal skills. On the plus side, the resulting software was completely customized to the company's needs. But quality, effectiveness, and future maintainability were totally dependent on the skills and strengths of the company's programming staff.
