Cultivating the IT Portfolio Manager

Since the days when it was known as "data processing," IT has undergone numerous name changes. During that time, IT has had its share of problems -- from initially being pegged as a purely technical function to the current perception that IT is misaligned with business needs. Concepts such as total cost of ownership (TCO), IT-business alignment, and, most recently, IT portfolio management (ITPM) were developed to align IT more closely with and enhance its responsiveness to business needs. In this Executive Report, I argue that methods such as ROI justifications and PM of IT investments are a good thing; but while necessary, they are insufficient to make IT a key player in shaping and executing a company's business strategy.
