Open source software (OSS) adoption is on the rise. Some open source systems -- such as the Apache Web server, the Linux operating system, and the MySQL database -- are becoming highly respected and are emerging as genuine alternatives to incumbent COTS applications. Furthermore, the trade press frequently reminds us how OSS helps organizations reduce costs and increase efficiency.
