Shared Services: Developing a Positive Brand and Reputation for IT

by Barbara Quinn

All staff functions carry the burden and opportunity of proving their value in a corporate world that has companies in the relentless search to reduce operating costs and improve shareholder value. Business leaders review overhead functions such as IT, finance, and human resources (HR) and often believe that these units have not done enough to reinvent themselves. In many cases -- and business leaders have a point here -- they see IT as a monopoly bureaucracy with escalating costs and no real accountability for providing the IT services that business owners want and for which they are willing to pay. Executives typically see one large allocation on their monthly profit and loss (P&L) statements for millions of dollars for IT, with no apparent ability of the department to control costs or improve satisfaction levels.
