Connecting IT to Business Strategy: Part II
While in an ideal world a company's IT investments as well as its plans, budgets, and actions clearly reflect the company's strategies, this is rarely the case in the real world. This three-part Executive Report series 1 shows how the tools and processes of the Strategy-to-Bottom-Line Value Chain 2 can be used to remedy this problem. The value chain is a consistent set of management processes that works from a common foundation and a clear expression of the business strategy. The value chain effectively carries forward that strategy through company planning, IT project development, investment decisions, and annual plans and budgets. The idea is simple: a company should spend money on IT only if those dollars directly support its business strategy and its operational effectiveness.
