A couple of decades ago, our aspirations for technology were high. With widespread use of third-generation programming languages in place, our ambitions found form in software too big for CPUs to run efficiently, in data structures too complex and data volumes too high for databases to handle, and in our appetite for distributed architectures ahead of what networks could deliver. It is not surprising that completing large-scale system projects quickly was difficult. It is surprising that they were done at all.
