Time to Get Real: Moving Toward the Real-Time Enterprise

The idea of the real-time enterprise has reached the top of the hype curve, and, as a result, the term is being stretched in so many directions by so many pundits that it's becoming shapeless, like a much-rented tuxedo. A casual Internet search on "real-time enterprise" yields approximately 1,890,000 hits; an examination of the first 10 sites shows how incredibly overloaded the expression has become. Software vendors, a number of analyst firms, and a few articles on the subject provide probably 10 different definitions of what the real-time enterprise is supposed to be.
