Crossing the IT-Business Divide

We all know that tradition can be hard to overcome. This is just as true for the IT-business relationship as it is anywhere else. IT's nascent steps 40 years ago focused on applying mainframes to the business -- the focus was on the mainframe, on the technology. Prospective data processors were recruited based on their ability to understand the computer (some may remember the aptitude tests used to identify computer-inclined candidates among existing employees). The care and feeding of the wonder machine in the glass house was the primary concern.
