The IT function may have grown too large and too multifaceted to be contained within the CIO-led organizational structure we are accustomed to. It is not just about the size of the IT organization -- inhouse or virtual -- or about the magnitude of IT responsibilities, or even about the Herculean effort required of CIOs to hold the reins of all the distinct IT areas. Rather, it is a matter of focus and alignment.
