There has been a recent rebirth of interest in the idea of performance metrics and performance management. However, this is not a new idea by any means. Since the days of Elton Mayo's famous Hawthorne studies at the Western Electric Company in the 1920s and 1930s right through the work of the late Peter Drucker, modern management theory has been grappled with using measurement and metrics.
