Business Process Outsourcing

by Paul Harmon

Those involved in outsourcing have begun to discriminate between information technology outsourcing (ITO) and business process outsourcing (BPO). In many ways, the distinction is very fuzzy. A common process that the BPO folks often cite is payroll. Almost every small business outsources its payroll process, yet most wouldn't think of themselves as being involved in outsourcing. Similarly, some organizations have outsourced their entire IT organization, and most would classify this as ITO, so you need to regard all the talk about BPO as the hot new approach to outsourcing with some skepticism.
