One of the trends that will dominate the year ahead will be the growing interest in and use of open standards. Of course, like so many IT terms, open systems mean rather different things to different people. For some, open systems means software products like Apache and Linux. For others, it means proprietary languages with publicly available specifications, like Java. For some it means notations, like UML, that are in the public domain. And for still others it means software tools, like the Eclipse software tools, that have been placed in public domain.
