A New Rap for Enterprise Computing
The Cutter Summit has always been a unique platform for genuine inspiration. This year's debate started with the dramatic opening by Professor F. Warren McFarlan, who dismissed the "spirit of denial and ludditism" embedded in the pronouncements of those who envision "the end of enterprise computing." But McFarlan's bold statement that "2005 is perhaps the most transforming and exciting time for IT" does not mean easy going for the computing community. Changes in our discipline go far beyond the usual stuff -- new technologies, new buzzwords, and new gadgets. The global economy bids farewell to many established aspects of business, by "flattening the world" (quote from recent book by Tom Friedman) dismantling traditional value chains, and bringing aspects such as business innovation, agility, and time-based competition into the very center of strategic thinking.
