Monitoring and Analyzing Business Process Execution -- Some Interesting Findings

I've been saying for years now that I believe that one of the most important developments in business process management (BPM) involves the application of analytics to monitor and analyze the efficiency of distributed business processes.1 Today it is possible to monitor business processes as they execute and to display the findings -- based on calculated key performance indicators (KPIs) detailing such criteria as cycle time, adherence to delivery date, process costs, and so on -- in management dashboards highlighting process performance. Some monitoring and analysis applications also offer capabilities for triggering and sending alerts (in the form of e-mail and pager messages) to process owners, analysts, and other interested parties, thus enabling users to proactively respond to process deviations before they affect operations.
