When a Picture Really Is Worth a Thousand Words

It's often said that a picture is worth a thousand words -- especially in the context of modeling, whether it be software modules or business processes that are depicted. However, this little catch phrase sometimes masks a deeper problem that I find is frequently at work in many organizations today, which concerns a failure to clearly distinguish two modes of working that are familiar to most IT practitioners: exploration and specification.
