"When the only tool you have is a hammer," remarked the great psychologist Abraham Maslow, "every problem begins to resemble a nail." The current interest in Web services overshadows other forms of middleware and threatens to distort the industry's perception of how distributed computing should be done. Web services has become the "hammer" -- yet the experienced craftsman's toolkit still contains a saw, spanners, screwdrivers, and an assortment of other devices.
