The Semantic Web

by Tom Welsh

It's confession time. I may have been guilty of selling the Semantic Web short. In the February WSS, I wrote that many experts consider it "a long-range research project with little immediate relevance or feasibility." And at the Cutter Summit in April, I described it as a "vision" and "a long-range effort, tapped by arm-waving salespeople." Without looking into it in much detail, I was content to shelve it as an interesting theoretical excursion that would not bear fruit for years -- if ever.
