The Evolving Architecture of J2EE and Web Services
Web services technologies based on XML and the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) are changing the face of distributed computing. Instead of relying on tightly coupled code-centric infrastructures such as CORBA, Remote Method Invocation (RMI), or DCOM for communication and data transport across networks, the use of SOAP over standard Web protocols is opening up new data-centric distribution options based on a loosely coupled architecture that can support both synchronous and asynchronous interaction.
