From our simplistic viewpoint, we wanted to abstract the link between a COBOL data structure and a process component, which is used or referenced by that data structure. Ultimately, our intent was to be able to establish the link between a data entity in the new data architecture and any of the programs that access, create, change, or modify that data entity anywhere in the system portfolio. We created a data model of the components needed to achieve that goal, and then we populated the tables with actual data from the extraction tools. Figure 1 shows the data model we used as our analysis model.
