Building a Real-Time Enterprise: Why It's Worth the Effort

Most great athletes are born with great reaction times. Their ability to run faster, hit a ball farther, or avoid a tackle is often predicated on the fact that their neural system is simply faster than their opponents'. In a sense, the same thing is true about enterprises. Great businesses also seem to have great reaction times. At their peak, great companies have the ability to move faster than their competitors, to take advantage of new conditions, to strike while the iron is hot. Having a faster reaction time than other companies translates not into Olympic medals but into record profits. Fortunately, it is possible for organizations to improve their reaction times.
