The Enterprise Unified Process: Extending the Rational Unified Process for the *Fortune* 1000

by Scott W. Ambler

A software process is a set of project phases, stages, methods, techniques, and practices that people employ to develop and maintain software and its associated artifacts (plans, documents, models, code, test cases, manuals, and so on). In this Executive Report, I provide an overview of the Rational Unified Process (RUP) and explain why it needs to be extended to form what I call the Enterprise Unified Process (EUP). EUP builds on RUP and adds two additional phases and eight additional disciplines, each of which is examined in detail in this report. Finally, the report ends with a discussion about adopting EUP.
