In May 1999, a whole year before SOAP and Web services exploded onto the global IT scene, Scientific American published a landmark article by two software gurus -- Jon Bosak and Tim Bray. Entitled "XML and the Second-Generation Web," the article declared that "the combination of hypertext and a global Internet started a revolution. A new ingredient, XML, is poised to finish the job" [5].
