Migrating to Enterprise Component Computing: The Harvesting and Replication Phases
This is the fourth installment in a series of reports by Michael Guttman and Jason Matthews that focuses on migrating to enterprise component computing. In the first Executive Report in the series (Vol. 1, No. 1), they began describing the process and the best practices that companies routinely follow to make successful transitions. They described a 5-phase process (see Figure 1) and explained the goals and decisions involved in the concept phase. In Vol. 2, No. 3, they described phase 2, suggesting how companies should begin putting an architecture in place, developing a plan, and implementing pilot projects, and in a related report (Vol. 2, No. 4), Guttman and Matthews describe how to approach the problems involved in creating an architecture for component development. In Vol. 2, No. 6, they described the third phase, during which the component development groups complete a number of projects, gaining significant experience and creating the component and development resources for the final phases. This month, they turn to the fourth and fifth phases of the process: harvesting and replication.
