With so much press from the software industry over the past few years, it's unlikely that you haven't at least heard of Web services and service-oriented architecture (SOA) by now. Web services have even been around long enough now for usable standards and products to start emerging from the fog of hype and marketing. Fairly mature implementations of the core Web services standards are currently widely available from most major vendors, and some have even been proven in early production applications by adventurous organizations.
