Business Process Change and E-Business

by Paul Harmon

Everyone has their own idea of what "e-business" is all about. I use the term to refer to companies that are using the Internet and various Internet protocols (e.g., e-mail, the Web [HTML], XML, and Simple Object Access Protocol [SOAP]) to automate business processes. Using the term as I do, nearly all of the new work on distributed computing and Web services would fall under e-business. Note that I'm using e-business broadly here, but a company could be involved in e-business without being involved in Web services. For example, company A might have a portal that allows customers to find information about the company and might even use e-mail, but it never accesses or uses software components or applications from other companies via the Internet.
