RDF versus XML: Which Way Should You Go?

by Timothy J. Dion

The Resource Description Framework (RDF) provides a new mechanism for understanding information on the World Wide Web. RDF is the core foundation behind the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) Semantic Web initiative. The Semantic Web is an extension of the current Web in which information is given well-defined meaning in order to facilitate better communication and cooperation between humans and computers. This Executive Update explores what RDF is, its benefits, how it relates to XML -- an emerging standard for information exchange -- and why the Semantic Web is important to corporate organizations.
