Programming Tools: Technology and Targets

by Tom Welsh

Writing software is tricky enough at the best of times, but we tend to underestimate its difficulty through some of our assumptions. For instance, it is natural to assume that each application is written in a single language and deployed to a single target platform. Reality is more complicated, and developers increasingly have to wrestle with multiple languages, APIs, and targets. This Executive Update, the third in a series of four1 dealing with software development practices based on a 2004 Cutter Consortium survey, reveals some interesting -- and perhaps counterintuitive -- facts about the nature of today's software projects.
