Business Mechanics 101: Repairing Your Engine

by Howard Webb

In my last Update (Vol. 7, No. 16), I used an engine and its parts as a metaphor for the workings of a business enterprise. After attending an engine mechanics course, I noticed great similarity between the workings of an engine and the workings of a business enterprise. Like an engine, all areas of an organization must function properly and work together if the desired performance is to be achieved. Any degradation of any function will likely compromise business performance. Again, compare this to an engine: Fuel systems are dependent upon electrical systems, ignition systems are of little use without something to ignite. Engine systems must work together to produce power. Likewise, enterprise processes must work together to achieve a purpose.
