Open Source: A Reality That Still Requires Careful Management

by Gabriele Piccoli

With this issue of Cutter Benchmark Review, we set out to explore the extent to which, and how, organizations currently use open source software. Our goal was to baseline and understand current practices, as well as to document the drivers and challenges respectively pushing and hindering the widespread adoption of open source software development and distribution models. After benchmarking practice, we sought to offer insight, tangible ideas, and guidance to our readers. Our contributors this month were Rick Watson and Marie-Claude Boudreau, Professors of MIS at the University of Georgia, and Jason Matthews, a Senior Consultant with Cutter Consortium. Rick and Marie-Claude brought to the issue expertise gained from their ongoing research on open source business models, while Jason leveraged his significant firsthand experience in this area as a consultant.
