Privacy in Search of Governance
Privacy continues to challenge corporate America. Today, the majority of business processes touch customer or employee information. Online databases potentially make this information widely available throughout the organization. Outsourcing and offshoring arrangements can make sensitive personal information available to an array of third parties around the globe. New technologies enable new forms of surveillance, resulting in fewer anonymous transactions and the collection of large quantities of personal information from customers. Ongoing security breaches and poor decisions about reusing customer information potentially undermine consumer trust and confidence and may result in legal actions against companies. The results of the Cutter survey on trends in corporate privacy governance suggest that the majority of organizations responding are committed to protecting privacy, but many don't have the governance structures or processes in place to make sure this happens.
