This survey explored the use of knowledge management in 117 organizations worldwide. Of responding organizations, 47% are headquartered in North America, 21% in Europe, 17% in Asia/Pacific, and the remainder in South America (7%), the Middle East (4%), and Africa (4%). Forty-six percent of respondents identified their organization as being in the computer industry (computer software publisher, computer hardware manufacturer, computer consulting, outsourcing/Web services/ISPs); 12% are in financial services; and the remainder cover a broad range of industries. Nearly a quarter of respondents identified themselves as IS/IT management, and another 22% identified themselves as project management, 10% as senior management/policymaking, with the remainder coming from consulting, programming, engineering, and other areas. Of responding organizations, 42% have more than 1,000 employees, 28% have 100-1,000 employees, and the remainder have 100 or fewer employees. Annual revenues range from less than US $5 million (30%) to over $1 billion (22%).
