Artificial intelligence (AI), much hyped in the mid-1980s and repeatedly written off for dead in the 1990s, today continues to be used to implement cutting-edge applications that simply would not be possible (or practical) without resorting to the technology. A perfect example is the SONAR system now deployed at the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) to monitor the NASDAQ, Over the Counter (OTC), and futures stock markets for potential insider trading and fraud.
