Sensitive Data Breaches Are Costly

by Curt Hall

Back in June, I discussed important steps that organizations should take to ensure the security of their sensitive data (see " Process Perspective Is Essential for Ensuring Data Protection," 21 June 2005). Basically, I said then that organizations must approach data security from a process perspective, adding that top-level executives must sign on to this effort. I tried to emphasize that companies cannot approach data security as just another data management problem to be handled at some lower level on a departmental or division- by-division basis. Data security procedures must be examined from a company-wide perspective. I also acknowledged that such efforts would involve considerable cost and effort to conduct.
