Microsoft's High-Performance Computing Initiative

by Curt Hall

I've been reading the notes from Bill Gates's keynote speech (and other related sources) from the recent Supercomputing 05 conference, which took place 15 November in Seattle, Washington, USA. This event is important for several reasons. For one, it signals Microsoft's official entry into the market for high-performance computing (HPC) with the Beta 2 release of Microsoft Compute Cluster Server (the general release is scheduled for sometime in 2006). It is also significant because it means that the market for HPC products has reached the point where Microsoft feels it should take a much more aggressive position. It also helps to shed some light on Microsoft's HPC vision and its strategy to make it happen.
