Informatica Snags Itemfield -- Shoots for Universal Data Integration

by Curt Hall

One bit of news that seems to have slipped in under the radar screen is Informatica Corporation's announcement that it is buying unstructured and semi-structured data integration vendor Itemfield for US $55 million in cash. With this acquisition, Informatica now has the technology to transform its flagship PowerCenter product into a "universal data integration platform" that can handle structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data integration and transformation. From a market perspective, this is important. It not only helps solidify Informatica as the most innovative data integration vendor, but also enables the company to move into the enterprise information integration market, in effect, nicely positioning itself as a key player just as organizations are increasingly finding that they need to integrate all forms of data into their everyday business operations.
