The Big Data Warehouse in the Cloud

by Curt Hall

Vertica Systems is offering an on-demand version of its high-performance, columnar analytic database hosted on Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) platform. This is important because, although other vendors offer cloud versions of their databases as well -- including EnterpriseDB (PostgresSQL), Microsoft (SQL Server), Google (Bigtable), and Amazon (SimpleDB) -- these offerings are primarily positioned for OLTP applications (in particular, for "Web 2.0" companies). Vertica, on the other hand, is targeting its cloud database specifically at companies wanting to create large, high-performance data warehouses and data marts running on Amazon EC2, which are licensed on a pay-as-you go service model. The attraction is that companies can quickly create a dedicated, high-performance analytic application without incurring the up-front data center costs and delays typically associated with traditional data warehouse/mart development and operation.
