For centuries, we have needed to measure things. Early civilization used the cubit (the distance from the tip of the elbow to the end of the middle finger) to determine lengths over short distances. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks used the wheat seed as the smallest unit of weight. Baseball uses the batting average as a measure of hitting skill. The calorie helps us know how to keep our weight in check, and the gas gauge in our car tells us when we need to fill up the tank.
