Finding the Value in Metadata Management

Imagine a library without a cataloging system. Finding a single book would be a major endeavor, and finding all of the books on a specific topic would be nearly impossible. In the 19th century, Melvil Dewey had the right idea when he developed the standard library classification scheme. The now-ubiquitous Dewey Decimal system may be considered the first successful metadata standard, while the US Library of Congress catalog, with more than 118 million items, is one of the world's largest metadata repositories.
