For the most part, today's information systems are not much more intelligent now than they were 30 or even 20 years ago. Many leading systems thinkers believe that the next big breakthrough will come in getting software to recognize concepts at a higher level -- to deal with the meaning of things and not just their form. Classically, the field of semantics deals with the study of meaning.
